Their songs serve as the Ten Commandments for alt rock, inspiring an entire generation of bands such as Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and Tool. Acclaimed for their swirling sonic symphony and unique studio alchemy, Jane’s Addiction have sold over seven million records in North America alone. CHRIS ISAAK
Beyond The Sun

Dist: EMI Music Canada
After more than a quarter of a century into his career, Chris Isaak has finally created the album he’s always wanted to make. Beyond the Sun, Isaak’s first Vanguard Records release out Oct. 18 —is truly a labor of love. As a child spinning his parents 45s in their Stockton, California home, this deeply committed artist has been obsessed with the glory days of Memphis’ Sun Studio and the visionary artists who got their starts there—including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis—all of them discovered and nurtured by the late, great Sun Records founder Sam Phillips. Now, at long last, Isaak has acted on this lifelong obsession, magically recapturing the transformative hepcat brilliance of the classic sides cut by these greats at Sun with Phillips during the mid-’50s, while also getting down to the heart and soul of his own deeply rooted musical identity.

Period. The self-titled debut features original material and covers from the likes of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, and Robert Johnson. ICED EARTH
Dystopia
www.icedearth.com
Dist: EMI Music Canada
ICED EARTH’s 10th studio offering, Dystopia, while not a concept album, founder Jon Schaffer admits there are unifying themes to several of the songs – and even an appearance by band mascot “Set Abominae.” In much the same way Horror Show (the band’s tribute to classic characters from literature and movies) was born, band leader John Schaffer said his interest in dystopian themes in music and movies led him to try his hand at that genre as well – even paying homage on the new album to the movies Dark City, V For Vendetta, and Soylent Green. The end result is ICED EARTH meets the nightmarish offspring of Brave New World and Blade Runner.

Recorded at Hamilton’s Vibewrangler Studio with Aaron Goldstein (Huron, Espanola) Young And Old conjures up a session where Gram Parsons, Buck Owens and Hank Williams pay a Basement Tapes visit to sit in with contemporaries like Joel Plaskett and Jeff Tweedy.
JAMES COHEN AND THE PRAIRIE ROOTS ROCKERS

Neil Young or Burton Cummings may not have been peers of singer-songwriter James Cohen when he was growing up in Winnipeg, as they had long split town by the time he started penning his first tunes. But there is no denying the influence the recordings, live performance, songwriting and compositional skills, creative sparks and collective work ethic that these sons of Winnipeg had on a young James Cohen. As he readied himself to record his new self-titled record, his fifth studio album, he was aware that the set of songs he was about to document were, “largely written around three central themes: the passage of time, human relationships, and regret.”
“I had an on-going fascination with the way people measure and mark their lives with specific dates and objects, and the relationships and interactions that influence those life events,” states Cohen of the songs that are found on his new album.
