ST. VINCENT
Strange Mercy
www.myspace.com/stvincent
Dist: Select
St. Vincent, the nom-de-plume of Annie Clark, will release her third album, “Strange Mercy”, via 4AD. Having worked together on 2009’s “Actor”, Clark reunited with producer John Congleton and recorded the album in her hometown of Dallas, TX at Elmwood Studios. The eleven new tracks showcase Clark’s gift for fusing the cerebral and the visceral, her melodically elegant arrangements packing hefty emotional punches. After “Marry Me” and “Actor”, Clark’s virtuosity has long been recognised, and “Strange Mercy” finds St. Vincent redefining the idea of the guitar hero, utilising the instrument as a pointillist artist might wield a brush. Countless judiciously placed riffs and instrumental flares, each distinct and unique, cohere into grand tableaus. On ‘Cruel’, she elicits punchy bursts like an R&B horn section. ‘Cheerleader’ froths and boils, with deep and fuzzy guitars bubbling up to the surface, while ‘Surgeon’ twirls about endlessly, Clark’s vocals dancing amid a blizzard of notes.
LYDIA LOVELESS
Indestructible Machine
www.myspace.com/lydialoveless
Dist: F.A.B.
Indestructible Machine, Lydia’s Bloodshot debut, combines heady doses of punk rock energy and candor with the country classicism she was raised on and just can’t shake. From foggy mountain throw-downs where she sounds (a lot!) like a tough Neko Case, to muscular power pop driven by choppy, tense guitar tonalities recalling Television’s Richard Lloyd, to the take no shit spirit of Loretta Lynn – and displaying country soul well beyond her years – Lydia’s true-to-life testimonials hit and hit hard. Be it whiskey, men, god or alienation, Lydia takes them all on; they may kick, but she kicks back harder.

DREAM THEATER
A Dramatic Turn Of Events
www.dreamtheater.net
Dist: Warner Music Canada
A Dramatic Turn of Events is an album born from transition, crafted with studied persistence and possessed by newfound freedom and free-flowing invigoration. The album strikes the prefect balance between Dream Theater’s intimate history with all that is heavy, progressive and melodic with each element fully realized. Longtime fans of the band intrigued by the speediness of the notes on display from Dream Theater have much to study on the album, while fans of melodic hooks will find equal pleasure within the songs.
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
Dead Throne
www.myspace.com/tdwp
Dist: Warner Music Canada
Forget everything you knew about The Devil Wears Prada. That’s because the technically proficient, guitar-driven American metal outfit you’ll hear on the forthcoming Dead Throne is a much different monster than the one you’d contended with on 2009’s breakthrough offering With Roots Above and Branches Below and 2010’s Zombie EP. Dead Throne signals a more evolved, more progressive The Devil Wears Prada and contains more than a dozen cutting-edge, razor-sharp, straight-ahead heavy metal tracks that are utterly brilliant not only in their composition, but also in their flawless delivery. Long-time fans of The Devil Wears Prada will no doubt be blown-away by the band’s crushing fourth studio LP, because it not only sounds bigger but goes much deeper, lyrically.
WE CAME AS ROMANS
Understanding What We’ve Grown To Be
www.wecameasromans.com

The past year has seen the band steadily gaining more mainstream attention, with a coveted spot on the Vans Warped Tour and cover feature for tastemakers Alternative Press. The new album is sure to resonate with fans of The Devil Wears Prada, Underoath, and August Burns Red.
SARA LOWES
Back To Creation
www.saralowes.co.uk
Dist: EMI Music Canada
There could be no more apt name for the debut album from Manchester’s Sara Lowes than Back To Creation. This is a record bubbling with the primordial soup of pop; a dozen songs packed full of imagination and invention. The title track alone takes you from icy Goldfrapp-style pop to a Dexy’s-influenced outro by way of Beatles-esque brass – and it’s brilliant.
